Commodity prices

The following were the rates (per kg) of commodities in local wholesale market on Monday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce & Industry: Groundnut oil-54, Palmolein oil-39.25, Sunflower oil-48, Tamarind (flower variety)-21 to 27, Tamarind (karipuli variety)-42 to 48, Chillies (refrigerated)-25 to 30, Chillies (non-refrigerated)-10 to 15, Rice 2716-13, Rice super fine-15, Rice Sona Masuri 16 to 17 Samba-15 to 16, Black gram (Pottu Minappappu)-35 and Red gram (Kandipappu) - 23.25 to 30.

Cargo firm scheme

Express cargo company, GATI has launched a scheme for giving away prizes to customers everyday. GATI sales manager N V R Murthy in a press release said prizes worth Rs 50 lakhs would be given away as part of the "win-har-din" (send more-win more) scheme. Customers can check for prizes by scratching the docket book. This is the first time that a logistics company had launched such a scheme. Dalit Christians protest

Activists of the All-India Christian Council Krishna district unit staged a dharna in front of the District Collector's Camp office to press for their long pending demand to amend Article 341 of the Constitution. The Dalit Christians demanded that the Constitution be amended to give them freedom of practising a religion of their choice. Though Articles 25 to 28 endowed upon them the freedom, Article 341 prevented them from retaining their caste.

Traders month

Bank of Baroda will celebrate `Traders Month' from October 17 to November 19 by extending overdraft or loan facility to eligible merchants. Under scheme overdraft or loan would be given from a minimum of Rs 25,000 to a maximum of Rs. 1crore, according to chief manager P.J. Bhaliya.

Essay contest

Essaying writing contest was conducted for policemen in view of the Police Commemoration Day here on Monday. The writers of the best and second best essays will be sent to participate in a state-level competition.

Barrage gates lifted

All 70 crest gates of Prakasam barrage were lifted releasing a flood discharge of 2.87 lakh cusecs into the sea on Monday evening. The surplus water in the Krishna was released from Nagarjunasagar is being released to maintain the safety level of 12 feet at the barrage. Vijayawada Irrigation Circle deputy superintending engineer K Rajendra Prasad,said there would be no further increase as the reservoir gates were closed in the morning.
