Staff Reporter

Alleged savage beating of two men by cops

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul on Monday ordered an inquiry into allegations that some policemen had badly beaten up two young men who were riding a motorcycle without helmets.

The incident had taken place at Nand Nagri in North-East Delhi on Sunday.

According to a Delhi police spokesperson, the Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Range), B.S. Brar, will conduct the inquiry and submit a report at the earliest. Any action against the policemen would be taken in accordance with the findings of the report.

Meanwhile, there was some improvement in the condition of Sarfaraz who had sustained serious injuries in the incident. The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East), Devesh Srivastava, said Sarfaraz and Rizwan, the other injured, were not yet in a position to make a statement but were out of danger.

While Rizwan's family members had taken him to Apollo Hospital on Sunday evening, Sarfaraz was admitted to St. Stephen's Hospital.

Earlier, both the injured had been taken to GTB Hospital from where they were referred to St. Stephen's Hospital.

On Sunday, Sarfaraz and Rizwan, both residents of Mandoli (Nand Nagri) in North-East Delhi, were riding a motorcycle without helmets when the police stopped them at a picket. However, according to the police, the duo tried to flee, lost control of the vehicle and hit the central verge.

Both fell and sustained serious injuries. The police took them to the GTB Hospital.

However, area residents had alleged that one of the constables had hit both with his baton when they apparently did not stop. Not only that, they also allegedly beat up the duo after they fell down.

Later, the family members and area residents gathered at St. Stephen's Hospital where they even roughed up a policeman. Additional police force had to be deployed to bring the situation under control.
