COIMBATORE: The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) has started drop-in-centres for school dropouts in Coimbatore district. Through this programme, drop outs under the age of 14 would be given eight to nine months training at the centres scattered over various parts of the district. This is an initiative of the SSA that comes under its Alternative and Innovative Education (AIE) programme and was launched last year. The NGOs would identify dropouts and enrol them at these centres. At least 15 students are required to start a learning centre for dropouts and some regions have only very few of them. Since it is impossible to have a learning centre at every region, SSA introduced this programme by which student drop outs from various places would be collected from their homes and taken to the nearest drop-in-centre. They would be picked up and dropped back to their homes after class. Madukkarai, Pollachi North Block, Madathukkulam and Tirupur are some of the places where drop in centres have been set up. A similar initiative called `Back to School,' for pre primary children also comes under the AIE. The SSA allots funds to NGOs to provide studying aids and transportation facilities for these children.
