At a time when there are not many women who succeed in shooting, the achievement of A. Kavitha, a II year M.A. Political Science student of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), is indeed remarkable. Many may think that shooting is a sport that does not suit women. But, Kavitha has made them give this idea a second thought when she annexed two golds and a silver at the State Shooting Championships held in Chennai. She also created a new record in the .22 rifle 3 position category with a score of 449, which has fetched her a berth in the All-India G.V. Mavlankar Shooting Championships in Kerala. Representing the Madurai Rifle Club, her illustrious shooting career started with three gold medals at the district-level competitions in 2003. The same year she bagged a gold and silver at the inter-district championship in Dindigul, followed by a gold and a bronze at the state championship in Coimbatore. There was no stopping Kavitha in the following year as she bagged five gold medals at the district championship. This year, she has returned with a rich medal haul at the state championship that was held in Chennai. Now, she is hoping to do well at the national-level meet. On hearing about her success, MKU Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu honoured her and recommended her name for the 2005 Kalpana Chawla Award.
