Milk production high in composite Dharmapuri district

Stands fourth in State following Salem, Vellore and Erode districts

DHARMAPURI: The composite district of Dharmapuri has recorded fourth place in the total milk production in the State following the districts of Salem, Vellore and Erode, said District Revenue Officer C. Natarajan here on Tuesday.

The Dharmapuri District Co-operative Milk Producers Union (DDCMPU) in Krishnagiri has as many as 741 milk producers associations with a total of 1.66 lakh members.

The union on an average procures around 2.10 lakh litres of milk a day with the money being disbursed on a weekly basis.

Of the total production, around 50,000 litres is procured in the Dharmapuri milk-chilling centre, 1.50 lakh litres in the Krishnagiri centre and 10,000 litres in the Denkanikottai centre. Of this, about 1.44 lakh litres is dispatched to the District Cooperative Milk Producers Union and 12,000 litres for local sales to the primary societies.

Mr. Natarajan said that the milk procured in the chilling centres was mainly supplied to Chennai and also used for manufacturing milk powder, butter, cheese and milk khova.

According to a recent survey, the quality of milk powder produced in Dharmapuri was superior when compared with those in Kerala, Andhra and Karnataka. A total of 21 women Primary Milk Cooperative Societies were opened in the last three years with 1,400 women as members. Around 2,387 litres is procured through these societies.
