Welcome ruling

The Bombay High Court judgment, setting aside the multi-crore sales of textile mill lands in Mumbai by the National Textile Corporation, is highly commendable. It perhaps marks the proudest moment in the history of environmental action in our country. Smile, Mumbaikars, you could fill your lungs with cleaner air now, thanks to our enlightened judiciary.

Subbiah Venkataraman,
Thiruvananthapuram

The order has dealt a blow to the plans of several developers who are in various stages of building glitzy shopping malls, fancy high-rises and multiplexes. The order is welcome because it would make available the much-needed lung space for the residents and provide cheap housing for the poor and textile workers who lost their jobs due to the closure of the mills. The order also sends the right signal to other State Governments that want to dispose of such property. It is hoped that the Maharashtra Government will abide by the ruling and not waste precious time and money of taxpayers by appealing against the verdict.

P. Sreenivasan,
Chennai
