Ferrer downs Calleri

MADRID: David Ferrer beat Agustin Calleri 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Madrid Masters on Tuesday.

Earlier Calleri beat 2002 French Open winner Costa 6-0, 7-5, and Sebastien Grosjean of France topped Lopez 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, saving the only break point he faced.

Costa, who has hinted for some time this might be his final season, talked of retirement again.

``It's tough because I'm 30. Motivations are weaker,'' said Costa, one of eight Spaniards to win a Grand Slam title. ``I have my knee, which hurts. You play week after week, for several reasons you become weaker and unsure. You lose confidence.''

Tim Henman, who has been struggling this season, won only his third match since Wimbledon, beating American Taylor Dent 6-2, 6-4. Also, the pro-Spanish crowd were finally rewarded for their support when Fernando Verdasco outlasted Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
