KOCHI: The Kerala Congress(Secular) leader P.C. George, MLA, has urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to relinquish the charge of the Home Ministry. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the law and order situation in the State continued to worsen ever since Mr. Chandy assumed charge of the Home portfolio. The latest incident in the series of worsening law and order situation was the attack on the Bishop House in Neyyatinkara, he said.
Farmers' plight
Mr. George urged the Government to allow farmers to repay the loans in instalments. Farm loans should not be misused for organising extravagant functions like marriages and the government could impose a moratorium on such misuse. Seven farmers had committed suicide in the last 10 days which indicated the gravity of the situation on the farming sector, he said. The party has submitted a 12-point charter of demands for farmers' welfare to the Chief Minister. The party workers would take out a march and stage dharna at the Kottayam Collectorate on October 24 to highlight the plight of farmers.
Shelve Vypar project
He said the Vypar river linking project should be shelved as it would affect the Kuttanad area having scarcity of drinking water. The party would organise a dharna in front of Pathanamthitta head post office on October 29. Answering questions, Mr. George said the party had won 84 out of 108 seats allotted to it by the LDF in the recent local body elections. He refuted the allegation that he was invited by the UDF to join it. The party acting chairman T.S. John, the general secretaries Jacob Thomas, E.K. Hassan Kutty and Elias Zachariah, Ernakulam district president Kuruvilla Mathews and Youth Front State president M.A. Nishad were present at the press meet.
