PONDICHERRY: A good number of private fleet operators affiliated to the Pondicherry Bus (Stage Carriage) Owners Association observed a token fast in Bharathi Park here under the chairmanship of the president of the Association B.Kannan on Tuesday urging the government to raise the fare. They contended that frequent rise in price of diesel and also increase in the cost of maintenance of the vehicles should be taken into consideration as these grounds necessitated the demand for hike in the fare. During the last one year or so the price of diesel per litre was revised frequently and now it stood at Rs. 31.72 per litre. Mr. Kannan said that the Association had placed before the Administration the difficulties with which fleet operators were operating the vehicles and sought the fare be fixed at 26 paise a km. and a minimum fare of Rs. 3 was also sought to be fixed. The hike would be only in the range of fifty paise to Re. l. Mr. Kannan said that there would be no heavy burden on commuters and the operators of town and intra State buses would find it a great relief.
