Government plans grand monument at Kizhoor

Village was the venue for historic referendum in 1954

PONDICHERRY: Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has announced that an integrated plan would be framed to develop the memorial and monument erected at Kizhoor in Villianoor commune panchayat limits as the village was the venue for referendum in 1954 which decided the liberation of Pondicherry from the French rule.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Department of Art and Culture of Pondicherry Government at the first anniversary of foundation of a museum on the precincts of the memorial at Kizhoor on Tuesday, Mr. Rangasamy said an arch would also be erected on the border limits of Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu .

Mr. Rangasamy said the Government was generally keen about preserving all historic places and monuments and sites that were associated with the freedom movement of Pondicherry.

Theni C.Jayakumar MLA said there was already a commitment on the part of the Pondicherry Government that the Kizhoor memorial and its neighbouring areas would be developed with an outlay of Rs. 1 crore. He said the Pondicherry Government had celebrated the golden jubilee of liberation of (de-facto merger) of Pondicherry on November 1 last year.
