CPI(M) flays Congress `silence' on civic polls

No efforts to revive grassroots of democracy, says party

Tsunami-hit Thengaithittu village had not been properly taken care of and steps should be taken to alleviate the sufferings of the villagers

PONDICHERRY: Secretary of Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) V. Perumal has taken exception to the Pondicherry Congress Government's "silence" on the issue of civic polls, which has not been held for 35 years.

He told newspersons here on Tuesday that the winter session of the Assembly held for a day on Monday did not come out with any indication. This showed that the Government was not keen on reviving grassroots of democracy in the Union Territory.

Mr. Perumal said organisations, democratic institutions, industries and individuals had contributed liberally to the Tsunami Relief Fund. The Government should come out with a white paper on the quantum of money spent on relief and rehabilitation. He alleged that the tsunami-hit Thengaithittu village had not been properly taken care of. Hence, steps should be taken to alleviate the sufferings of the villagers.

Unemployment

The problem of unemployment among educated youth was a matter of concern, as no alternative scheme had been framed. In this situation, retired officials were being re-appointed, he said referring to H. Dasarathan's posting as Deputy Secretary in the State Information Commission.

T. Murugan, executive committee member of the Tamil Nadu unit of the CPI(M), said he had sent a telegram to Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera opposing Mr. Dasarathan's appointment, which was unjustified and unethical. The appointment should be withdrawn.
