GUWAHATI: Violence spread to more areas in the curfew-bound Karbi Anglong hill district in Assam on Tuesday, with 30 houses belonging to the Dimasa tribe set ablaze in the Manja area. One more body was recovered, taking the toll in the violence that broke out on September 26 to 71. On Monday, suspected militants massacred 33 Karbis in Hamren sub-division. Deputy Inspector-General Police (Central Range) L.R. Bisnoi told The Hindu that there were no losses to either side during the three different encounters between security forces and militant groups on Tuesday. Four miscreants were caught setting ablaze abandoned houses in a Dimasa village under Manja police station. There was no relaxation in curfew in any part of the district. Security forces had been sent to all abandoned villages of the Karbis as well as the Dimasas to prevent escalation of violence. The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad staged a demonstration before the Raj Bhavan demanding the dismissal of the Congress Government and the imposition of President's rule in the State. Its breakaway faction, AGP (Progressive), said the State Government had failed to contain violence in the hill district. The party's youth wing has called a State-wide bandh on Thursday in protest against the failure of the Government to protect lives. A BJP delegation led by Rajya Sabha MP S. S. Alhuwalia visited the two relief camps to take stock of the situation. The party's State unit demanded the imposition of President's rule in the State.
