HLC likely to get additional water

Staff Reporter

Review of availability on October 24

ANANTAPUR: The Tungabhadra Right High Level Canal system in the State, which irrigates parts of Anantapur, Kadapa and Kurnool districts, is likely to get two to three thousand million cubic feet more water than was allocated earlier this year. Availability of water in Tungabhadra reservoir comes for a review at the Tungabhadra Board office in Hospet on October 24.

Sustained inflows and an increased number of flood days this year has improved the chances of all canal systems based on the reservoir getting increased allocation. According to rough estimates by irrigation engineers about 75 tmcft water has already been let out of the reservoir as flood discharge so far this year.

The Tungabhadra Board had assessed water availability in the inter-State water project at 144.3 tmcft this year at the beginning of the water year in June. Of this, the pro-rata allocation for Andhra Pradesh share in HLC was worked out at 22.12 tmc ft. With good inflows, the availability is likely go up by 10 to 15 tmcft.

As the schedule decided for release of water to the ayacut to the HLC sub-systems of Mid Pennar South Canal, Mid Pennar North Canal, Tadipatri Branch Canal and Pulivendula Branch Canal from November 6 is approaching fast an Irrigation Advisory Board meeting is likely to be convened once again after October 24 to take a final decision.

The district administration has released Rs. 20 lakhs for silt removal in 20 distributaries of MPSC, tying up with NFFW and it will be completed before the release of water. The 30 repair works sanctioned with Rs. 6.75 crores for MPSC, MPNC and TBC sub-systems could not be grounded due to municipal poll code and will now be taken up only after the closure of the canals.
