Low pressure in Bay

CHENNAI: Many places in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry are likely to receive rain or thundershowers in the next 24 hours.

The Metereological department said a feeble low pressure area had formed over south west and adjoining south east and west central Bay of Bengal. Viralimalai received the highest rainfall of 5 cm during the 24-hour ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The department has forecast isolated heavy rain over coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during the next 48 hours. — Staff Reporter

PRO of power panel

CHENNAI: P. Muthusamy, Deputy Director (Engineering), Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, has been designated as Public Information Officer of the Commission, and R. Balasubramanian, Secretary, as the Appellate Authority with immediate effect, says an official release. — Special Correspondent

Mettur dam reaches full level

METTUR: The Stanley Reservoir reached its full level of 120 feet for the third time this year on Monday night.

According to the Public Works Department officials, the dam reached its full level at 11.10 p.m. It received an inflow of 21,630 cusecs and the storage was 93.47 tmcft. The dam had touched its full level on August 30 and September 15. At 12 p.m. on Tuesday, the dam received an inflow of 13,909 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Award for school

COIMBATORE: The Vidya Vikasini Opportunity School was presented the `Best State Information Centre' award instituted by the National Trust, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, New Delhi. The award was presented on September 30 in New Delhi to the Director of the school, S.S. Jayalakshmi. The centre offered counselling to parents, persons with disabilities and members of non-Governmental organisations; worked closely with the State Government and registered organisations; provided information on disability to the public in Tamil Nadu and Kerala; participated in the local-level committee activities of the National Trust; trained `care givers' and conducted medical camps and awareness programmes. — Staff Reporter

Dalit leader moves court

MADURAI: Dalit leader C. Pasupathi Pandian has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court against an order by the Revenue Divisional Officer, prohibiting him from entering Tuticorin and Srivaigundam taluks.

According to the petitioner, the order curbed his movements in the taluks for six months though any order under Section 144 could not be in force for more than two months. When the order was challenged before the court, the RDO withdrew it and passed another order restricting his movement for two months. Mr. Pandian said he was unable to attend court proceedings in criminal cases pending before the Tuticorin Sessions Court following the order. — Staff Reporter

Motorcyclist killed

VILLUPURAM: A container lorry and a truck laden with iron rods collided head on near the Pidagam bridge here on Tuesday. In the impact, the truck overturned, scattering the iron rods on the road. Shahul Hamid (41) who was riding a motorcycle was crushed to death when he fell under rods while passing the truck. The lorry driver Rajasekar (36) of Chennai and cleaner Sakthivel (25) of Thiruvarur, and the truck driver Anbalagan (41) of Thirukkattupalli in Thanjavur and cleaner Sudhagar (35) of Udayarpalayam in Tiruvallur who sustained injuries were admitted to the Villupuram Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Man commits suicide

NAGERCOIL: A man committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of a lodge at Nagercoil on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Natarajan (55) of Erode was staying in the lodge for the past eight days. When he did not open the door, suspecting foul play, the lodge manager registered a complaint with the police. The police broke open the door, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

DINDIGUL: R. Balaji (28) of Chettinaickenpatti was killed and pillion rider Sundararajan (25) was injured when their moped collided with a corporation bus proceeding to Madurai from Salem on Dindigul-Thadikombu main road near Collectorate on Tuesday.

The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital here. — Staff Reporter.

Jewels, cash stolen

DINDIGUL: An unidentified gang robbed 40 sovereigns of gold jewels and cash Rs.1,500 from the house of Saravanan, (31), rice merchant, on Arokiamatha Street in Mentonsa Colony on Monday night. The gang broke open the house and escaped with jewels and cash. — Staff Reporter

Fire accident

ERODE: Three thatched huts were destroyed in a fire accident on Tuesday. According to the police, fire broke out in one of the thatched huts in Vettukattuvalasu near here in the morning and spread to nearby huts. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot. The Erode North Police is investigating. On Monday night, fire broke out in a house at Sarojininagar, Erode in which wooden materials were reduced to ashes. - Staff Reporter

Students injured

ERODE: Two students from Sudan met with an accident in Chitode on Monday night. According to the police, Abdulla (19) is studying in a private engineering college at Komarapalayam and his friend Babugar (20), in a pharmacy college in Komarapalayam. While trying to avoid a cyclist, their motorcycle skidded and both fell down sustaining serious head injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Erode. The Chitode police are investigating. - Staff Reporter

Southern Railway additional earnings

TIRUCHI: The Southern Railway has reaped additional earnings of Rs.3.88 lakhs from 6,763 passengers during the Cauvery Pushkaram festival at Srirangamfrom September 28 to October 10 station alone.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.14 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 15,268 cusecs and the discharge 12,000 cusecs.
