Terms police decision a violation of rights

CHENNAI:
: Puthiya Thamizhagam president K. Krishnasamy has criticised the police for refusing permission to organise party conferences at Rajapalayam and Sankarankovil.
Welfare of poor
Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Dr. Krishnasamy said the party had planned a series of meetings to demand distribution of land to the landless poor, as it felt that the Centre's employment guarantee scheme would not benefit the rural poor. It would only provide 100 days' employment in some districts annually that, too at Rs. 60 a day. If the government was interested in the welfare of the rural poor it should distribute land.
Dr. Krishnasamy alleged that the Government's steps to improve their condition such as Land Ceiling and Bhoodan movement had failed. The only alternative was to make them landowners. It was to highlight this demand that the party planned the meetings.
The police action, he alleged, was denial of the Constitutional right to freedom of expression and a violation of human rights.
Memo to Governor
The party would organise a protest demonstration before the office of the Inspector General of Police (South Zone) on October 26. It was planning to submit a memorandum to the Governor.
