PONDICHERRY: White is Pondicherry's official colour. The Aayi Mandapam and other monuments in the Union Territory are all white.

Recently, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, inaugurated an archway at Mullodai on the Cuddalore-Pondicherry Road. The arch has three parts--the main one and two side arches. The centre and sides have small isles, which have been tastefully landscaped. The main one at Mullodai has a statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and the archway was inaugurated on the death anniversary of Kamaraj on October 2. The impressive white archway looks pretty, especially at night with lights.

The archways, which mark the entry to Pondicherry, are not only white in colour but also modelled after the Aayi Mandapam. The archway on the Dinvanam road near JIPMER has been in existence for quite some years now.

According to sources in the Public Works Department, which is executing these projects, work on two more archways at - Madagadipet and Kanakachettikulam - is on. The estimated cost of the archway at Kanakachettikulam on the East Coast Road is Rs 40 lakhs and work on the main archway is already completed. The landscaping work is going on and the work on the side archways will soon begin.

The Chief Minister said the Government was planning to open an archway at Keezhur, the historical site where the referendum to join the Indian Union was held. "We might also consider putting up statues of important leaders inside the archways."
