CBI asked to probe phone tapping case

Staff Reporter

Investigation report to be submitted to the court within four weeks

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to lodge a case and conduct investigation into the tapping of phone of a businessman here by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi Police in violation of the Indian Telegraph Act and the Supreme Court guidelines for bugging telephones for investigation purposes.

On a petition by businessman Yudhistir Kumar, Justice R.S. Sodhi directed the CBI to complete the investigation within four weeks and submit a report to the Court.

The Court later posted the matter to January 6 for further hearing.

Earlier, the Court had directed the Delhi Police to hand over the file having the details of the sanction granted by the Home Secretary of the Delhi Government to the city police to tap the phone of the business for the purpose of investigation into his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

The Standing Counsel of the Delhi Government had later submitted the file to the Court in a sealed cover. While directing the Court staff to take the file on record, Mr. Justice Sodhi had observed: "It is a serous matter, and no one has the right to invade the privacy of an individual in violation of laws.''
