Congress, TDP workers clash

KADAPA : Congress and TDP workers clashed during filing of nominations for Chinnakesampalle PACS in Badvel mandal on Tuesday leading to a lathi-charge.

Chinnakesampalle sarpanch and Congress leader G. Ramasubba Reddy, his brother's son Kesava Reddy and some activists obstructed TDP members were going to file nominations. It led to a wordy duel. - Staff Reporter

Medical employees to hold demonstrations

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Medical Employees' Union has decided to hold pre-strike demonstrations on October 20. A four-hour strike to protest against the Government's attitude towards long-standing demands will follow.

G. Ramachandar, president, and K. Krishnamacharyulu, general secretary, said in a press release on Tuesday that the union would intensify its agitation if the Government failed to intervene in meeting the demands. - Special Correspondent

Jail term for SI

HYDERABAD : A Sub-Inspector of Police was convicted and sentenced to two-year jail term for taking bribe for registering a criminal case in Medak district.

The convicted police officer, S. Ramchandar, working in Hadnoor police station, was trapped by the anti-corruption bureau officials while he was taking the bribe, a bureau press release said.

In another case, G. Raja Rao, an assistant executive engineer working in the municipal corporation of Visakhapatnam, was awarded a one-year jail term for acquiring properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. - Special Correspndent

Minorities panel meeting in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD : The National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities will hold its meetings here on October 21 and 22.

On the first day, the commission members will meet Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Ministers, officials of various departments and chairmen of the SC, ST, BC, minorities and women welfare corporations. On October 22, they will meet leaders of religious and linguistic minorities, representatives of NGOs, public and intellectuals. - Special Correspondent

Committee for State golden jubilee fete

HYDERABAD : The Government has constituted a three-member ministerial committee to decide and coordinate the month-long golden jubilee celebrations to be organised in connection with formation of the State from November 1.

The committee, comprising K. Rosaiah (Finance), N. Raghuveera Reddy (Agriculture) and Mohd. Ali Shabbir (Information and PR), will identify the activities to be focussed during the celebrations, according to an official release. - Special Correspondent

Telgi case adjourned

VISAKHAPATNAM : The First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, D. Chiranjeevulu, on Tuesday adjourned the Telgi fake stamp paper case to November 1.

He also issued a notice to the city Commissioner of Police to produce two of the accused --Ramachandra Desai and Mallesh Balappa -- in his court. The two are at present lodged in a jail in Mumbai in connection with another case. - Special Correspondent

Explosives seized

KADAPA : The Rayachoti police arrested two motorcylists and seized 110 detonators and 90 gelatine sticks from them on Tuesday, according to Rayachoti Urban CI Mallikarjuna Varma. - Staff Reporter

Lightning claims five lives

KHAMMAM : Lightning claimed the lives of five persons in the district on Tuesday.

According to reports reaching here, a housewife struck by lightning died at Karepalli village late in the evening.

Lightning also claimed the lives of two persons at Patalingala village and two more in Satanigudem village. - Staff Reporter

LIC unveils new policy

TIRUPATI: LIC has introduced `Jeevan Plus,' a unit-linked whole life plan in Tirupati. Unveiling the policy on the city branch-I premises here on Tuesday, the Marketing Manager of Nellore division, J.M.M. Yogananda Murthy, said the policy covered life for 100 years and hence was different from other unit-linked schemes. - Staff Reporter

Surprise raids

Nellore: Revenue officials conducted surprise raids on commercial complexes in Kavali and seized 23 LPG cylinders. The raids followed complaints from consumers, that some shop and hotel owners were getting cylinders by manipulating agencies. - Staff Reporter

Rs. 40 lakhs deposited

KURNOOL: A revenue team led by RDO Suryaprakash deposited Rs. 40 lakhs with the Magistrate Court at Atmakur to avoid auction of Government buildings in a land acquisition case. The High Court had ordered the department to deposit Rs 67.18 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

Man dies in mishap

KADAPA: Jogina Changalrayudu (40) died and two others sustained injuries when their motorcycle skidded and fell near Mangampet in Obulavaripalle mandal on Monday night. - Staff Reporter

Four hurt in collision

Nellore: Four passengers sustained serious injuries when two auto rickshaws collided near Anantasagaram mandal, on Tuesday. Drivers of the two autos fled. - Staff Reporter

Seed for flood-hit farmers

KHAMMAM: In all, 3,750 farmers who have lost their crops in floods, will get seed as art of the contingency plan. Some 160 quintals of seed will be made available for distribution to the flood-hit farmers in Bhadrachalam, Chintoor, Vararamachandrapuram and Kunavaram mandals, according to Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Yogita Rana.

She said in a press release on Tuesday that the seed costing Rs. 5 lakhs was being supplied by the Andhra Pradesh Seed Development Corporation. The cost of the seed would be borne equally by the ITDA and the Lions' Club of Bhadrachalam. - Staff Reporter

Tirunalatippa gets facelift

Nellore : Once it was known for its pebbles and stones. Now there is a lot of transformation resulting in it becoming something like a consortium of temples. The place is Tirunalatippa near Atmakur town, which was just like any other neglected area, till recently. However, in view of its serene atmosphere, some devotees have selected the place and decided to make it into a devotional centre. Thanks to their untiring efforts, Tirunalatippa, now has got temples for Vinayaka, Anjaneya, Venkaiah Swamy of Golagamudi and Yogi Vemana.

Novel protest

Nellore : Sanitary staff at the municipal corporation office staged a novel protest on Monday. Agitated over non-payment of salaries for the last four months, the workers closed all gates and dumped garbage at the main gate and other places in the corporation office.

Seeing the mood of the workers, the authorities volunteered to pay two months salary and the remaining by the end of the month. However, the workers said they would not budge unless the entire amount was paid. - Staff Reporter

Food packets for rain-affected

Kakinada: The Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited has distributed one thousand food packets to the people affected by the heavy rain in Sarpavaram, Ganganapalli Kalva gattu, Bhavanarayanapuram, Sarpavaram BC colony and S.Achuythapuram kalva gattu areas on Monday, according to PR Balaji Deputy Manager of the GFCL. - Correspondent

Throw-ball tourney from October 21

Rajahmundry: The 13th State-level throw-ball tournament will be held for under-19 boys and girls from October 21 to 23 in Rajahmundry. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, district throw-ball association president K. Pratap Sinha said that about 600 students from 20 districts were going to take part in the tourney and it will be held at Nethenja school grounds. Sri Gouthami School student KMS Harsha was selected for this tournament to represent in East Godavari district team. - Staff Reporter

Farm worker drowned

Kakinada: A farm worker Ganta Kanaka Rao (38) was drowned while crossing a hill stream that was in spate in the Agency village of Gangavaram on Monday. His body was retrieved on Tuesday morning.
