RAGHUNATHPALLY (WARANGAL DT): Believing that evil spirit has cast a shadow, elders in Mandelagudem prohibited people from drinking water available in the village. Due to recent floods, many villagers took ill. The villagers then began believing that something had happened. While a majority apprehend that goddess Durga is angry with them as they failed to construct a temple. Women in the village argued with the elders that every village surrounding theirs had an exclusive temple for goddess Durga but not their own. The elders held a meeting at which they decided that they should stop consuming the water for one month. To appease the goddess, they offered a goat and after one month, they would take a decision on the issue.
`Collective decision'
As a result, villagers have to fetch water from agricultural wells located on the outskirts. Despite officials requesting them not to believe in superstitions as they have well protected overhead static reservoir tank, the villagers still abide by the decision of the elders. Sarpanch Dasari Jayamma said it was a collective decision and a majority of people believe that it was a test by the goddess.
