CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday seized more than 3,000 kilograms of meat from an unlicensed packaging unit in Chintadripet and buried it at its landfill after treating it with chemicals. The officials said the meat, mostly beef, was unfit for consumption as it had not been stored properly and had reportedly been brought to the city in baskets from Andhra Pradesh by train. They further suspect that the Chintadripet factory may have been used to slaughter animals as they found several cutting instruments and carcasses of animals. Corporation sources said the civic body had received complaints from residents of Neduncheziyan Nagar in Chintadripet that an unlicensed factory along the western banks of the Cooum was being used for slaughtering animals and packaging meet. On Tuesday morning, a team led by the Triplicane Zonal officer and Assistant Health Officer conducted a surprise raid of the factory premises on West Cooum Road. They sealed the factory operating out of a shed. According to rules, slaughter of animals for meat is allowed only in the civic-agency operated abattoirs and in the presence of veterinary doctors. Samples lifted during raid on Tuesday have been sent to Veterinary College and Veterinary University for tests.
