Hospitality industry seeks infrastructure status

Special Correspondent

It calls for a uniform policy on discotheques

CHENNAI: The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) has appealed to the Centre to grant the hospitality industry "infrastructure status" to get all the incentives that go along with other industries.

Addressing a news conference after the valedictory of the three-day All India Hotel and Restaurant Covnention, which concluded at the Chennai Convention Centre on Monday, the outgoing president of FHRAI, M.P. Purushothaman, said, "There can be no tourism promotion without hotels." The required land could be made available for encouraging new and existing entrepreneurs to fulfil the demand for hotel rooms. He thanked the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for assuring the hospitality industry that she would consider further reduction in the luxury tax rate.

Urging the State Governments to play a pro-active role in promoting tourism related projects including hotels, Mr. Purushothaman, said the two official bodies have impressed upon the State Governments including the Tamil Nadu Government to rationalise the rate of luxury tax levied by star hotels on the actual tariff on hotel rooms, and increase the Floor Space Index (FSI) as provided to the Information Technology sector to help encourage the hospitality sector.

Manbeer Chaudhary, new FHRAI president, said if the Delhi Government could permit 24-hour pubs, why should there not be a uniform policy on permitting discotheques to function beyond midnight.

Awards presented

Awards were given away including for championing the cause of environment protection. Bharat Bhushan, Principal Secretary of Kerala Tourism, and P. Sudhakaran, Chairman, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, gave away the 2005 FHRAI awards.
