CHENNAI: Two students from Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute at Maduravoyal will be going to San Francisco, California to present posters on nanotechnology. The abstract of a paper they prepared on the subject has been chosen for presentation as a poster to be displayed during a research session to be held from October 24 to 26. Jyoti Ranjan (Industrial Biotechnology) and his elder brother Vivek Ranjan (Electricals and Electronics) are third year students at the college studying for a B. Tech degree. The students hail from Bokaro Steel City in Jharkhand. "When I went to IIT Mumbai for a national-level workshop, we interacted with professors and scientists from Cambridge and the University of Ulster. They gave the address of Foresight Nanotech Institute in San Francisco," says Jyoti. The students returned to Chennai, prepared a project and e-mailed it to the company. Foresight conducts research and higher studies in nanotechnology. The students will be attending a conference between October 22 and 27, where their poster will be displayed. "The 4ft by 4ft poster will be presented on October 24." The students' scientific project is about using nanotechnology to deliver drug for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
"I studied papers by scientists on the net and came to know that the cancer can be treated using nanotechnology," says Jyoti. ``The students' paper explaining the treatment method has been nominated for the "Foresight Nanotech Award of Excellence." The students say nanotechnology allows for drug delivery to the site of tumour. The Ranjans are awaiting clearance from their college, which they say has assured them financial support for travel.
