Support job scheme, PM tells CMs

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked the States to pledge full support for effective implementation of the "historic" National Rural Employment Guarantee legislation passed in Parliament in August.

In a letter to all Chief Ministers, he said transparency and public accountability must characterise the implementation, in keeping with the Right to Information Act. "We have a historic opportunity to take a significant step towards transforming the rural economy through the instrument of the NREG Act."

"You may appreciate that the Act invests the rural people with the right to demand employment and they should know it. We must spare no effort in communicating the meaning and purpose of the Act across the rural areas, especially where poverty and distress migration describe the condition of living," Dr. Singh said, asking the States to be vigilant in ensuring that the resources were well utilised. Systems of strict monitoring, verification and evaluation would have to be established.

Dr. Singh asked the Chief Ministers to ensure that officials dealing with the programme were among the best because the impact of this "major intervention" the Government was making for the poor hinged on their performance.
