NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan on Monday joined hands and succeeding in getting included the recent earthquake as an emergency item on the agenda of the ongoing 113th Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, leading the Indian delegation, argued passionately for its inclusion in the agenda so that a discussion on the role of parliamentarians in facilitating disaster prevention measures, capacity building for early warning systems and, effective rehabilitation of the affectedlace. India, along with Pakistan and Mexico who submitted similar proposals pushed for the emergency item on similar subjects. After the introduction of the item by Chaudhary Amir Hussain Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly, Mr. Chatterjee rose to support it, a Lok Sabha Secretariat release said. Mr. Chatterjee extended his condolences on behalf of the people and Parliament of India to those who had lost their loved ones in Pakistan. He exhorted all parliaments in the world to come together to assist in early rehabilitation of the affected and in re-construction of the ravaged regions. The Assembly then adopted the item unanimously.
