NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday condemned the killing of Jammu and Kashmir Minister Ghulam Nabi Lone and the bid on party MLA Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami by militants in Srinagar. "At a time when the people of Jammu and Kashmir are suffering from the tragedy of the earthquake and the CPI(M) and other political parties are pre-occupied with relief activities, this attack is despicable and shows the lack of elementary human values in the perpetrators," the Polit Bureau said in a statement. Demanded a probe into the attacks, the CPI(M) said another party leader Ghulam Nabi Ganaie was killed in Anantnag district on Monday. The incidents highlighted the necessity of providing adequate security and protection for the party leaders, who were being targeted by extremists. The State Government must take immediate steps. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat spoke to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and said the Centre should provide adequate security to party members in the State. In a separate statement, the CPI said the attack was astonishing. "The attack in this high-security complex is a matter of serious concern. The State and Union Governments should get alerted, as this is the season when terrorists intensify their activities." The All-India Forward Bloc said that at a time when the people of the State were suffering from the after-effects of the devastating earthquake, the attack over innocent people showed the "inhuman and ugly face of terrorism." Party general secretary Debabrata Biswas said the State Government should take immediate and necessary action to build an atmosphere conducive to peace. Centre of Indian Trade Unions secretary Dipankar Mukherjee demanded immediate action against the perpetrators of the crime and demanded full-fledged security to Mr. Tarigami in the wake of increasing attempts on his life by terrorists.
