Strike partial in Guntur

RTC to hire 120 more drivers today

GUNTUR: The strike by RTC employees was partial in Guntur district on Tuesday with the management running 53 per cent of bus services on all the routes except some of the long-distance ones.

Out of the 6,788 employees only 294 attended according to Regional Manger G. Jaya Rao and these employees along with 425 hired conductors and 102 drivers ran 572 services till evening 8 p.m. out of the 1,062 regular services. The RTC was expecting to run another 30 buses by midnight.

Minor accidents

The revenue for the RTC fell from the normal Rs.55 lakhs per day to Rs.20 lakhs, the RM said. There were two minor accidents in Repalle division at Sajjavaripalem and Dhulipudi leading to minor injuries to passengers. The RTC authorities did not however, confirm these incidents.

There was mild tension in the Regional Manger's office here on Tuesday when many conductors hired by the RTC had to be sent back for lack of work.

The number of drivers was few and buses had to be started late due to this. Mr. Jaya Rao said that the Guntur region was trying to recruit another 120 drivers on Wednesday. Maoist call

Twenty-five school buses too plied. There was mild tension in Vinukonda bus station with not many people venturing to operate buses due to the boycott call given by the Maoists. The Circle Inspector, MRO and the RTC authorities were, however able to run buses from 8 a.m. The JAC leader Hanumantha Rao, said that the strike was successful as they were able to prevent maximum number of employees from going on duty. The Telugu Desam Party district president Makineni Pedarattaiah, visited the bus station to give moral support to the JAC leaders.
