Free textbooks distributed

COIMBATORE: Educational authorities in Coimbatore district have distributed free textbooks worth Rs. 3.25 crores to students in Standards 1 to 12.

A release said that the average expenditure for textbooks given to a student in high school or higher secondary school was as follows: Standard 6 - Rs. 108; Standard 7 - Rs. 121; Standard 8 - Rs. 141; Standard 9 - Rs. 150; and Stdandards 11 and 12 - Rs. 269 (Group I), Rs. 289 (Group II) and Rs. 215 (Group III).

Adi dravida and tribal students in Standards 1 to 10 received free notebooks, student beneficiaries under the Noon Meal scheme in Standards 1 to 8 received free uniforms, those in Standards 1 to 12 received free bus passes for travel between home and school, and students of Standards 11 and 12 who belonged to scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, backward class and most backward class received free bicycles to help them overcome transportation problems between home and school.

For Plus Two students from the Adi dravidar, backward class, most backward class and tribal communities, schools offered free coaching classes for the entrance examinations to professional courses.

Free medical check ups in school ensured that the children remained healthy and that illnesses were detected early when there was a good chance for successful treatment.

Scholarships

To encourage deserving students, there were scholarships for students who obtained the first three places in the tenth and 12th Standard public examinations at the State and district levels, so that they could take up higher studies of their choice.

Students who lost breadwinning parents while in school were eligible for financial assistance paid as interest on a deposit of Rs. 50,000. Scholarships were also given to talented students and children of small and medium farmers.

During the academic year 2005-06, Mudis Government Higher Secondary School and Government higher secondary schools in Vijayapuram, Sundakamuthur and Palladam (for girls), were upgraded.

Eight schools were upgraded from middle school status to high school. They were the seven Government schools at Semmedu, V. Kallipalayam, Oomaipalayam, Rakkiapalayam, Sethumadai, Malaiandi Pattinam and Karuvampalayam, besides the Municipality High School at Kumar Nagar in Tirupur.

During the academic year 2005-06, vacancies were filled up for the posts of 77 secondary grade teachers, six Tamil teachers and 38 junior grade graduate teachers in the district.

Those who benefited under the Noon Meal scheme in Coimbatore revenue district were as follows: 73,400 in 2001-02; 71,974 in 2002-03; 70,000 in 2003-04; and 72,000 in 2004-05.

Subsidy for repair of school buildings was Rs. 107.15 lakhs; for school use Rs. 48.04 lakhs); for teachers Rs. 49.59 lakhs and for permanent teaching aids for the teaching - learning programme Rs. 6 lakhs.

Allocations were made for computer education (Rs. 15 lakhs), education of girls (Rs. 10 lakhs), special coaching classes for school children from scheduled castes and tribes (Rs. 10 lakhs), nursery education (Rs. 15 lakhs) and education for physically handicapped children (Rs. 74.136 lakhs).
