KWA bid to juggle supply draws flak

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Even as many parts of the city continues to reel under the shortage of drinking water, the frantic attempts of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to juggle with the available quantity of water has started to draw the ire of the public.

While the residents of West Kochi charge that the redirecting of water to Vypeen following the partial commissioning of the Ad Hoc Water Supply Augmentation Scheme (popularly known as the HUDCO Scheme), for Vypeeniites, water for the basic necessities of life still remains a distant dream. Moreover, the faulty supplying schemes planned by the KWA has caused division among the people of the islands as the scheme continues to benefit the public at varying levels.

As the ad hoc scheme was only partially commissioned, the system of supplying drinking water through barge was still continuing in Vypeen. Water from the barges was pumped into the existing network in Vypeen at Kalamukku.

The pumping was done in the northern and southern directions on alternate days, ensuring steady supply for both areas on these days.

However, a couple of days ago, the barge supplying water to the northern direction was withdrawn, while the pumping of water into the lines under the ad hoc scheme was continued. While the people who used to get water pumped from the barges began to experience water shortage, those who could not avail of the water pumped from the barges began to get water supply.

Following the complaints of the local people whose supply was affected, the KWA suddenly decided to reinstate the earlier situations, thus reversing the ire of the people.
