The Sivakasi police have succeeded in banning fish cart vehicles from criss-crossing narrow roads and streets in the town. Two years of policing not only saw around 250 fish carts off the roads, but also rendered an equal number of drivers jobless. The Sivakasi Deputy Superintendent of Police, P. Saravanan, has taken an initiative to rehabilitate them. Initially, 15 of them, having good habits, have been chosen for bank loans for buying cargo autorickshaws. The State Bank of India, Sivakasi town, has also come forward to help the police, providing loans to these drivers without any collateral security. Keys of the new vehicles were handed over to the drivers recently.
