Theatre instils life into classrooms

FOR THE PEOPLE: A play being enacted to explain the concept of `Vision 2020', President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's blueprint for the country's development

BANGALORE: Think "theatre", and your subconscious mind will take you to a world of huge sets, glittering costumes, dazzling lights and sound effects. But what your mind may leave out is a concept alien to the traditional world of theatre: using theatre as a tool to teach and to learn. At Christ College, a "theatre-in-education" (TIE) course is making news, transforming dull classrooms into a place to stage a play, to get dramatic.

The people behind the course explain: "The course seeks to involve students proactively in dissemination of knowledge. The TIE programme is based on the edict that nothing can make for better practical learning than learning through experience." The TIE course is a six-month programme in which the participants work with the Script Peoples Theatre (SPT) and Christ College. After this, the participants are ready to use the techniques they have learnt to help students. They also learn to develop their own techniques based on the reality of their environment.

This year, the people behind TIE have decided to get even more creative. They have integrated with the course President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's "Vision 2020".

Here's the latest about TIE: the Centre for Education Beyond Curriculum (CEDBEC), Christ College, along with the SPT, has organised a teacher-training programme on TIE on the college premises. The programme begins at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.

For details and registration, contact the CEDBEC office, Christ College, on phone (25502052/25536280) or through email (cedbec@christcollege.edu).
