KOZHIKODE: The committee of the State Assembly, which had visited juvenile homes in the State recently, said that juvenile homes in the State do not have many of the facilities that they should have been provided with under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. The members of the panel headed by C.P. Mohammed, MLA, visited the juvenile home in Kozhikode on Thursday. The committee found that juvenile homes and their subsidiary organisations did not have adequate staff strength. The committee members were shocked to find that the inmates, who were children, were not being given sufficient food. The Assembly committee was in Kozhikode to check the extent to which the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act 2003 were being followed. The panel held a sitting at the Collectorate. The panel also visited the juvenile home at Vellimadukunnu, the observation home, aftercare home, short-stay home and the old age home run by the Social Welfare Department. The panel members said that the staff in these establishments should be imparted special training as the inmates belonged to various social and cultural backgrounds. The committee would urge the Government to provide necessary training to the staff. It would also recommend to the Government that aftercare homes attached to juvenile homes be given all facilities as under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. The panel would again visit the home within two months.
