LDF and UDF observe dawn-to-dusk hartal

  • Several people, including policeman, injured
  • Three shops and a motorcycle damaged
  • Police say the situation is under control

Kozhikode: A tense situation is prevailing in Perambra, near Vadakara, following clashes between activists of the BJP and the CPI(M) on Wednesday. Seven activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) were injured in the clashes.

A dawn-to-dusk hartal was observed by the supporters of the LDF and the UDF at Perambra town on Thursday.

Most of the injured were referred to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital while others were recuperating from minor injuries at a health centre. A police constable also sustained injuries. Three cases have been registered at the Perambra police station.

On Thursday afternoon, an unidentified mob attacked a BJP activist, K. Padmanabhan, inside the Perambra market.

The police said that at least three shops and a motorcycle had been destroyed in the clashes between the BJP and SFI/DYFI activists on Wednesday evening. The incidents occurred at the Perambra bus station and the main junction.

According to the police, the trouble started after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and SFI activists clashed at the Higher Secondary School at Perambra. A group of outsiders assaulted SFI activists inside a classroom in the morning. Violence erupted when the SFI/DYFI activists took out a protest march in the town in the evening.

Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police T.M. Aboobaker, and Deputy Superintendent of Police U. Sadanandan Nair are camping in the area.

The police said that the situation was brought under control. Mobile patrolling had been intensified and police pickets were put up at the main junction and bus station at Perambra.
