LOOKING FOR A HAT-TRICK: Two-time champion Carlos Moya will return in 2006 for the Chennai Open.
Chennai: Defending champion and former World No.1 Carlos Moya has confirmed his participation in the $400,000 Chennai Open 2006, scheduled to be held from January 2 to 8. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who in 2005 became the first champion to successfully defend this title, will be attempting a hat-trick. The Chennai Open is South Asia's only ATP event and is one of eight in Asia. Speaking on his participation, the man with eight ATP singles titles and career prize money of over $11 million till date said, "The tournament is great and the enthusiasm of the Chennai crowds is very encouraging. I love India and it's always a pleasure to come back here. I am really looking forward to playing at the Chennai Open once again. This is the fourth time that I will play here and having won the title twice I am confident that I will be able to raise my game to the highest level and get a great start once again to the new ATP Champion's race." Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director, IMG/TWI, South Asia said, "It is an honour to have Moya play at the Chennai Open once again. He is a Grand Slam champion and has been ranked in the top 10 consistently and we can certainly expect some scintillating tennis from him in Chennai." V. Narayanan, President, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) said, "We are happy to have Carlos Moya in Chennai once again. He is the defending champion and the crowd's favourite."
