HYDERABAD: Chinese rowers dominated the first day of the heats in different categories of the 11th Asian rowing championship at Hussain Sagar Lake even as Indian men pulled off a surprise result finishing first by clocking 6.00.80 in the light weight men's eights heats here on Thursday. The Indian team comprising Sunil Khakde, Balyan Ratheesh, Praveen, Saju Thomas, Narayan Rathore,Pradeep Balyan, Darmesh Sangwan and Satish Joshi maintained a comfortable lead from start to finish on the 2000 m course (with which they are familiar) in ideal rowing conditions on still water with no wind. There was more to cheer about in the afternoon when the women's team comprising Swathi Sanjay, P.R.Raje, Julee Verghese, Pravasini Dwivedi finished first in the light weight women's coxless fours with a timing of 7.28.97 finishing ahead of the Chinese Taipei team which clocked 7.48.75. It was informed that all those who topped the heats will automatically qualify for the finals scheduled on October 22 and 23 while the rest in each category will battle it out again tomorrow to book the other slots.
