Thiruvananthapuram: Finding out the prevailing market price for the daily catch, has often been a recurring issue for fishermen. In fact most of them end up fixing the price dictated by the middlemen. But things might change for the better soon. The Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation (KSMTF) has decided to set up computer assisted information centres in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta. The decision was taken at a three-day training programme, which began on Thursday, for fishermen on how to make effective use of information technology resources in their day-to-day activities. Around 30 fishermen, selected from various parts of the State are taking part in the programme organised jointly by the KSMTF and the Indian Social Institute, Bangalore. The programme includes sessions on the relevance of computer related applications such as e-mail and the Internet. Said T. Peter, president, KSMTF, "A proficiency in Internet will help fishermen to know the market price of their catch, which helps them haggle with middle men. It also assist them in downloading satellite images revealing where fish shoals are."
