CHENNAI: Anna University is mulling restructuring its engineering syllabus to make the curriculum relevant to industry needs. The exercise will cover all final year undergraduate courses and both postgraduate years, Vice-Chancellor D.Viswanathan told reporters here on Wednesday. The new syllabus will be applicable to all 240 engineering colleges in the State. "We are willing to revise the subjects every year as far as applied knowledge electives go. The core subjects, however, will remain the same," he added.

Support from industry

The new syllabus would be wholly supported by industries. As a first step, Lucas-TVS would fully support a final year elective in M.E Manufacturing Systems Management next year, including guest lectures by its representatives.

"A new system of industry-institute videoconferencing will also soon be introduced in Anna University to enable live-interaction with industry experts from manufacturing bases. Mumbai-based firm Nicholas Piramal will bear the logistical costs of the project," Dr. Viswanathan said. The facility would be started at Anna University and extended to all colleges after the Ku band facility becomes operational in two months. The university has also decided to invite industries for signing memoranda of understanding for technology business ventures and technology incubators.

The move to revise the syllabus has been welcomed by captains of industry. "We wholeheartedly welcome the move and will provide any funding required. We are also open to the idea of a sabbatical for Anna University staff in our firm. When students graduate out of the university, they can now be directly absorbed into the industry with only a brief familiarisation period," said S. Nagarajan, Executive Director, Ashok Leyland, who was also present at the press conference.

Earlier, at a felicitation function organised by Anna University TVS Centre for Quality Management (AUTVS CQM), Dr. Viswanathan said the university was consistently striving to produce international-standard engineers.
