Bangalore: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna on Thursday said that another massive project for developing 3,000 km of road in the State at a cost of Rs. 3,000 crores would be launched. The feasibility study of the project would be ready in eight months. Speaking to presspersons, the Minister said that the Cabinet had already approved it. The project would be implemented under the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project. The Minister said he had asked the officials to prepare a plan for developing 2,000 km of road and identify the stretches. The service roads on either side of the Mysore-Bangalore highway would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 70 crores, he said. On the controversial World Bank-funded Rs. 2,030-crore project, Mr. Revanna said only 557 km of road had been completed during the tenure of S.M. Krishna as Chief Minister and work on 1,000 km of road was completed after he took charge of the department. The remaining work would be completed by December next year.
Bangalore roads
The Minister said that 38 roads around Bangalore such as Banneraghatta Road, Kanakapura Road, Mysore Road, Magadi Road had been identified to improve infrastructure for the IT corridor. The cost of the project was Rs. 516 crores. The Minister said Rs. 24 crores would be spent on diversion of roads around the HAL area.
Damage to bridges
Mr. Revanna said 7,426 bridges and culverts on 17,000 km of State highways had been damaged in the recent rains. Also, some patches of roads had been damaged. They would be repaired at a cost of Rs. 59 crores in six months. Mr. Revanna said that he had directed the authorities to widen the State highways to 12 metres. The deputy commissioners had been asked to use the funds for filling potholes under the flood relief programme, the Minister said. The other new road development programmes for which approval was awaited are Hosur-Anekal-Ramanagaram-Magadi-Dobbspet (balance stretch) Rs.15 crore; State highway 41-Jalaki to Maharashtra border road (Rs. 8 crores); Sira-Amarapura Road (Rs.10 crores); Zaheerabad-Nanded road in Bidar town (Rs. 13 crores); Mukuta-Madikere road (Rs.10 crores) and National Highway 4 A. Anmod to Castle Rock Railway Station road (Rs. 2 crores).
