A befitting honour

N.G. Narayana

GULBARGA: N.G. Narayana, an expert in public health and General Secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, has been selected for the Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidyashree Award for 2005.

Secretary of the Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishthan S.S. Hiremath said here on Thursday that Dr. Narayana would be presented a purse of Rs. 10,000 and a citation on January 1, 2006 by the eighth peethadipathi of Sharanabasaveshwar Samasthan Sharanabasawappa Appa commemorating the sixth anniversary of the pratishthan, which is also the birthday of the well-known medical teacher and physician P.S. Shankar.

He said the selection committee of the pratishthan also selected the works of Bangalore-based Brinda Sitaram "Not out-winning the game of cancer" and "Jaina Vaidyakiya Parampare" by Dhanyakumar Ijari of Hubli for the Dr. P.S. Shankar Best Medical Literature Award for 2004.

Environmentalist and journalist Nagesh Hegde, who has translated the work of Dr. Brinda Sitaram into Kannada, would also be honoured and presented a commendation certificate.

Dr. Brinda Sitaram and Dr. Ijari would be presented a purse of Rs. 5,000 and a citation.

Sixty-two-year old Dr. Narayana was a student of Bangalore Medical College and completed his postgraduate Diploma in Public Health from the All-India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Calcutta, in 1989.

After joining government service in the State, Dr. Narayana worked in different capacities and was also deputed as Assistant Epidemiologist to Bihar under the National Small Pox Eradication Programme launched in 1974.

Although the deputation was only for three months, the Union Government and the World Health Organisation retained Dr. Narayana in Bihar for 13 months.

Dr. Narayana was posted as Medical Officer and Epidemiologist in the Guinea Worm Eradication Programme of the Union Government and the WHO from 1989 to 1998 and was responsible for eradicating the guinea worm disease from Gulbarga, Bijapur, Raichur, Dharwad and Bellary districts.

Within one year of his posting as medical officer in Gulbarga district there was a marked improvement in the efforts to tackle the guinea worm disease in the district and recognising his work the Union Government invited him to attend the Task Force meeting in New Delhi in 1991 and 1992 for the eradication of the disease in the country and present a paper.

Dr. Narayana was also nominated as Chairperson of one session of the Task Force meeting in 1991 and 1992.

Dr. Narayana was also given the responsibility of eradicating malaria in Bangalore Urban district in 1998.

He had also worked in Udupi, Mysore, Kolar, and Shimoga districts.
