Tax evasion to the tune of Rs. 5 crores unearthed in raid on Madurai-based lottery agent

CHENNAI: Following the crackdown on doctors, lesser known builders and businessmen, officials of the Income Tax (Investigation) Wing have spread the dragnet for lottery agents, medium sized builders, and gold refinery merchants.

Giving details of the recent searches on a well established Madurai-based lottery agent, highly placed departmental sources told The Hindu here on Thursday that tax evasion to the tune of Rs.5 crores was detected following the recovery of ``unaccounted banking transactions and those under benami names.''

Currency and jewellery totally worth Rs.65 lakhs had been seized and ``incriminating documents'' recovered in the two-day operation. Raids were conducted on more than seven business and residential premises in and around Madurai.

``The searches targeted the main lottery agent, his two daughters and brother," a source said. Written statements admitting to ``unaccounted banking transactions" have been obtained from members of his family.

The action came after the State Government slapped a hefty sales tax penalty on the lottery agent.

Cash seized

In a search on the premises of a Chennai-based builder, Rs.60 lakhs was seized. The officials raided the Besant Nagar office and other premises of the builder. From a gold refinery merchant, the search yielded Rs.30 lakhs and jewellery worth Rs.60 lakhs.

The sources pointed out that these recent searches and surveys have been carried out with a prime objective that the Central Government investigative agency was not only being ``active'' but also cautioning the tax evaders that the department would not be a silent spectator.
