New V-C for Jamia Hamdard

NEW DELHI: S. Ahmad has taken over as the new Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard here. Prior to this appointment, he was working as Director Grade Scientist at the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute at Pilani in Rajasthan.

Dr. Ahmad, who did his post-graduation from Allahabad University and Ph.D. from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, has got over 60 papers published in international and national journals.

JNU hosts seminar on literature

NEW DELHI: A seminar on "The City in Asian Literature" was held at Jawaharlal Nehru University here on Thursday. Organised jointly by the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies and Katha, a non-government organisation that publishes originals and translations of Indian language literature in English and Hindi, the seminar was part of pre-events for Katha Asia Utsav 2006.

Inaugurating the seminar, the Dean of the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies, Prof. Amar Basu, emphasised on the study of literature in the social context.

Several JNU students presented papers on literature written in Hindi, English, Bengali, Hebrew, Palestinian, Bodo and Malayalam.

SEWA Mela

NEW DELHI: A three-day "SEWA Mela" showcasing handicraft and home-based products made by self-employed women from seven States will be held at Aga Khan Hall here from Friday.

Organised by the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) -- a labour union of poor self-employed women workers in the unorganised sector -- the mela will exhibit tussar silk saris, dupattas, durees, shawls, lacquer work, smocking, traditional embroidery and mirror work and chikan work saris.

New non-official director for NMDC

NEW DELHI: R.G. James has been appointed non-official Director of the National Mineral Development Corporation Limited.

Mr. James, who is general secretary of Lok Janshakti Party, has held posts like chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board and chairman of the Central Workers Education Board.

Kids Lab

NEW DELHI: BASF, one of the world's leading chemical companies, along with National Science Centre here is conducting the popular "Kids Lab'' here.

A large number of students in the 8-to-14-year-age-group from about 40 schools in and around Delhi are participating in the 11-day programme that began at the National Science Centre on Wednesday.
