Jayakumar appointed Public Prosecutor

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has appointed S. Jayakumar Public Prosecutor in the Madras High Court.

According to a notification issued by G. Ramakrishnan, Public Secretary, the Government appointed Mr. Jayakumar after consultation with the High Court. He is at present the Additional Public Prosecutor in the court. — Special Correspondent

Heroin seized from air passenger

CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at the Anna International Terminal have seized Heroin/Brown sugar weighing 400 gm, which is valued at Rs.40 lakhs, from a Colombo-bound passenger.

According to C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, Chennai Airport, Naina Mohammed Abdul Aban was questioned about his frequent trips to Male via Colombo and about the contents of his baggage.

On persistent queries, he admitted that he had swallowed 100 capsules wrapped in colourful balloon. The passenger has been arrested under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. — Special Correspondent

DK volunteers stage demo

CHENNAI: Youth and women's wing volunteers of Dravidar Kazhagam on Thursday staged demonstrations in district headquarters in support of their demand for lifting the ban on recruitment in government services.

Party youth wing organiser K. Chindaniselvan led the demonstration, which was held in front of the Chennai Collectorate. — Special Correspondent

Film chamber plea to Jaipal Reddy

CHENNAI: The South India Film Chamber of Commerce has regretted that there has been no representation given to Tamil Nadu in the jury's selection panel for selecting films for the Indian Panorama section.

In an appeal to the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, the former president of SIFCC, A. Kothandaramaiah, explained that if Tamil Nadu was neglected, the Chamber would resort to boycott of functions and film festivals associated with the film industry.

The SIFFC, he said took such a decision as the 6-member jury panel, had no representative from Tamil Nadu. — Special Correspondent

Tax on LPG conversion Kit reduced

CHENNAI: The State Government on Thursday notified the reduction in rate of tax payable on sale of LPG Conversion kits for automobiles.

From October 19, the tax payable has been reduced to four per cent, says the notification. — Special Correspondent

COTEE plea on ex-gratia payment

CHENNAI: The Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees (COTEE), affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, has appealed to the State Government and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to extend the coverage of payment of ex-gratia to contract workers who have completed five years of service as on March 31, 2005.

S. Pancharatnam, COTEE general secretary, said under the present scheme, over over 13,000 workers have been left out. — Special Correspondent

Youth held for rape, murder

TIRUNELVELI: The Paavoorchathram police have arrested a youth for raping and murdering a woman on Wednesday.

They said A. Subramanian alias Murugan (27) of Thippanampatti came to the the house of his friend, Pachchaimaal, of Pattanoon Meenakshipuram on Tuesday and asked his friend's wife, P. Thaamarai Selvi (25), a mother of three children including a six-month-old boy, to accompany him to a nearby farm, where he raped her after stuffing her mouth with cloth, which led to her death. — Staff Reporter

Country bombs seized; one held

TIRUNELVELI: The Koodankulam police have seized 10 country bombs from Kooththankuzhi and arrested a person in this connection.

Following information, the Sub-Inspector, Athisayaraj, raided the house of Jesu Antony (46) of Kooththankuzhi on Wednesday and seized the bombs hidden in the backyard. — Staff Reporter

Building inaugurated

TIRUNELVELI: The Collector, Atul Anand, opened a new building constructed at an outlay of Rs. 19.50 lakhs on the premises of Tilak Vidhyalaya Higher Secondary School, Kallidaikurichi, recently.

While Vidhya Sangam of the school donated Rs. 4.50 lakhs, C. Arumugam, a retired engineer, contributed Rs. 15 lakhs for the new building.

Woman attacked

Tuticorin: Chellammal (45) suffered injuries after two men attacked her at Tiruchendur on Tuesday.

The woman picked up a fight with the duo while fetching water from a public tap at Pudhu Colony Street.

They attacked her with a sickle. She was admitted to Tiruchendur Government Hospital. Sekhar (27) was arrested while his accomplice Muthukumar was at large. — Staff Reporter

Rain in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: The district received 69.8 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Thursday, according to Disaster Management and Mitigation Department sources.

Following are the rainfall received at different places across the district: Vedanantham-1 mm; Kovilpatti- 13 mm; Srivaikundam - 20 mm; Vilathikulam -15.2 mm; Ettayapuram- 7.4 mm; Kazhugamalai- 2.2 mm and Ottapidaram - 11 mm. — Staff Reporter

Two tonnes of fish found dead

ERODE: About two tonnes of fish were found dead floating in the Sarkar Periyapalayam tank. and The villagers complained that it was due to large-scale release of effluents into the drains, which flowed to the tank.

In Sarkar Periyapalayam within Uthukuli Panchayat Union, a big water tank was formed several years ago on a 400-acre site. Rainwater and sewage from the Noyyal river flowed into the tank. Added to this, sewage from Tirupur also flowed into the tank. Several tonnes of well-grown fish are found in the tank. Suddenly, about two tonnes of fish were found floating dead on Wednesday. The villagers complained that some dyers discharged untreated effluents into the Noyyal river, which flowed into the tank, causing the death of fish. - Staff Reporter

Grievances meet

ERODE: The monthly farmers grievances meeting would be conducted on October 28 at 10.30 a.m. in the District Development Council hall, Collectorate, said Collector D. Karthikeyan in a press release on Thursday.

He urged the farmers to represent their problems for redressal.

Book exhibition extended

THANJAVUR: Saraswathi Mahal Library, the biggest manuscript library in the whole of Asia, here has sold books worth Rs.1,21,109 under its 50 per cent concession sale announced in connection with the 228th birth anniversary celebration of King Serfoji II, a press release issued here by M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Collector, said. The sale was on for 17 days from September 24. But, as the public response was overwhelming, it has now been extended up to November 30. The Collector appealed to book lovers to use the opportunity to purchase books.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.31 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 25,208 cusecs and the discharge 24,670 cusecs.
