CHENNAI:
In a novel gesture, managements of transport corporations in Tamil Nadu have written to the spouses of employees explaining the monetary benefits the staff will be entitled to in the wake of the recent wage accord, "which will win praise from posterity."
The letter describes the respective transport corporation employees as a family and details how despite increasing cost of fuel and spare parts, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has taken care to ensure that the workers' interests are not affected and sanctioned a pay hike. "... The Chief Minister herself held talks, heard the demands of employees and announced a new wage hike and additional benefits for employees... so that the employees' families further prosper."
However, the communication has evoked criticism from some workers who have written back asking why a similar gesture was not shown when there were no wage accords in 2001 and 2004 and, consequently, no wage hike.
Some others remarked they were "surprised" by the "belated realisation" that transport corporation employees, who work day and night under difficult conditions, had families to maintain. A single accord, which "betrays" the employees had been announced when there should have been three wage agreements in 2001, 2004 and 2007, they said and urged the managements to pay the arrears from 2001.
When queried, transport corporation officials said the letters were sent in good faith. They claimed the gesture had been widely welcomed.
