Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's wife Endon Mahmood died on Thursday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 64. Official news agency Bernama quoted Mr. Abdullah as saying his wife died at 7:55 a.m. local time at his official residence in Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital. Mr. Abdullah and Mrs. Endon were married in 1965. Mr. Abdullah has often called Mrs. Endon his ``number one supporter.'' Mrs. Endon was an influential figure in Mr. Abdullah's life and was instrumental in persuading him to seek his post when former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad tapped him to be his deputy in 1999. Mr. Abdullah (65) replaced Mr. Mahathir as Prime Minister in October 2003. Mrs. Endon discovered she had breast cancer after her twin sister Noraini was diagnosed with the ailment in early 2003. Noraini died a year later. Mrs. Endon had since made regular trips to the U.S. for chemotherapy treatment and returned from treatment in Los Angeles early this month after spending about three months there. She was hospitalised upon her return and was discharged on Monday.
