DAVANGERE: Five persons, including three police personnel, were injured in a communal clash in Chennagiri town on Wednesday. Two civilians, one each from two communities, who were injured in the clash, have been admitted to the General Hospital at Chennagiri. A number of vehicles, including police vehicles, and a house were damaged in the clash. A van and a truck were also damaged when the mob started throwing stones indiscriminately. The police resorted to lathicharge and brought the situation under control. A mob forced its entry to a house and ransacked it damaging the television and other household articles. Prohibitory order under Section 144 has been clamped in the town for three days. The Superintendent of Police, Shivakumar, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shahu, visited Chennagiri. Senior police officers and a large number of policemen have been posted in the town. Only a few bus services were operated from Chennagiri town. All shops and hotels remained closed on Thursday. Chennagiri town wore a deserted look. People who came to the bus stand and other public places ran following rumours that there were fresh incidents of violence. Unconfirmed reports said that a boy belonging to a particular community was assaulted near the Chennagiri Tank today by a group of people. Mr. Shahu told The Hindu that trouble began when a motorcycle hit a person belonging to a particular community near a place of worship. The person started quarrelling with the motorcycle rider and later he and his others assaulted motorcycle rider. The motorcycle rider later mobilised people and with their help assaulted his attackers. Then a large number of people assembled at the place of worship and started threw stones indiscriminately. The Friday Shandy in the town has been cancelled. Mahima Patel, MLA from Chennagiri, is expected to address a peace committee meeting. The Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner are expected to take part in it. The police have not made any arrests. Two cases have been booked in connection with the clash.
