SAFETY MEASURE: Zero velocity valves fitted to the water supply rising main in Bellary city to prevent frequent bursting of the pipes.
BELLARY: Two zero velocity valves, worth Rs. 7.65 lakhs, were fitted to the 900 mm rising main pipeline, which supplies drinking water from the Allipur Reservoir to the mother tank. The valves were installed to prevent frequent bursting of rising main due to backwater pressure caused in the wake of power cuts. The main pipeline had burst at least a dozen times in the past couple of years affecting drinking water supply in the city.

The installation of such valves elsewhere had proved to be successful, G. Somashekar Reddy, Mayor, said. He added that steps would be initiated to replace the existing line with MS pipeline to overcome the problem. B. Sriramulu, MLA, Bheemappa, Assistant Commissioner and in-charge Municipal Commissioner, were present. Subramanya, Executive Engineer, Gangadhar Assistant Executive Engineer, Water Board, are supervising the works being carried out by Mega Engineering Works of Hyderabad.
