Court moved against magazine
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has moved a magistrate court here seeking to punish the editors, reporter and photographer of Kumudham Reporter for sedition, criminal intimidation and for having promoted enmity and ill-will between different classes of people.
The petition, filed by party president G.K. Mani, said the Tamil bi-weekly had published a "preposterous, slanderous and defamatory" article in its issue dated October 20, alleging that the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, who is also the organising secretary of the party, had attempted to misappropriate Rs. 57 crores of Red Cross Society funds meant for tsunami victims of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Quoting an Andhra Pradesh-based journalist, Subhash Chandran, the article alleged that the amount was either diverted to other projects or not spent on rehabilitating tsunami victims. It said the Minister could not be contacted for his comments.
Mr. Mani said the impugned article was published with an "ulterior intention of defaming and slurring the image" of the Minister as well as the party he belonged to.
The article was "factually incorrect, false and motivated," Mr. Mani said.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Egmore, Maharajan, before whom the matter came up for hearing, took the complaint on file and ordered notice to the 10 accused persons. He also posted the matter to November 11, when they must appear in person.
