Reunion islanders to help with tsunami rehabilitation

20-member team holds discussions with Chief Minister, officials

Pondicherry: A 20-member delegation from the French island of Reunion was in Pondicherry on Thursday to hold discussions with Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Speaker M D R Ramachandran, Development and Relief Commissioner of Pondicherry B V Selvaraj and the French Consul-General Michel Seguy on rehabilitation of tsunami-hit villages in the Union Territory.

The leader of the delegation, Julien Ramin told newsmen here that the federation had raised Rs. 80 lakhs as contributions from various organisations, individuals and others in Reunion which would be used for rehabilitation in the tsunami ravaged Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. The purpose of the visit was to identify specific projects that could be taken up by the Federation of the Reunion.

V. Nallam, a senior doctor and director of the Clinic Nallam, who coordinated and facilitated the meetings of the visiting team with officials and others said the delegation had among others four women deputy mayors from Reunion, journalists, philanthropists.

He said the delegation had already taken up rehabilitation works in cyclone or earthquake hit States such as Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The team would visit Karaikal.
