A second desalination plant for Chennai

T. Ramakrishnan

The Government has already decided that water from the proposed Vayalur check dam will be supplied to the IT industry

CHENNAI: Metrowater is contemplating setting up one more desalination plant on the southern fringes of the city. There is already a proposal to set up a plant at Minjur.

The second plant, which is likely to have a daily capacity of 50 or 100 million litres, is being designed to serve the increasing needs of the IT industry that is situated along the Old Mahabalipuram Road. The requirements of domestic consumption have to be met as well as the southern parts of the city are witnessing higher real estate development than other areas.

The Kancheepuram district administration has been approached for identifying suitable land for the plant. Metrowater is taking steps to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and will shortly float bids in this regard, sources say. The Government has already decided that water from the proposed Vayalur check dam will be supplied to the IT industry. The estimated yield from the check dam is 20 MLD. But this will not be sufficient in the future considering the growing requirements of the industry. This is the reason behind the proposal for the desalination plant, the sources say. At a meeting to be held next week, the Board of Directors of Metrowater is likely to discuss the new desalination project.

As the mode of execution and funding have not yet been decided, efforts are on for preparing the DPR. The Government adopted the mode of design, build, own, operate, and transfer for the 100 MLD Minjur plant.

So, it was left to the project promoter to prepare the DPR. Metrowater and the promoter signed a water purchase agreement last month for the Minjur project. And the latter has initiated the process of seeking the required clearances.
