SOME CARE THIS: Abandoned babies at Sisu Vihar in Kurnool on Thursday.
KURNOOL: The problem of abandoned children is severe in Kurnool district. Much before Sisu Vihar, the Central Government-sponsored home, is opened formally, eight babies landed in the lap of volunteers. The project named `Sisu Griha' is sponsored by Central Adoption Resource Agency to take care of the abandoned children. The babies will be under its care until they are formally adopted by childless couple through a formal procedure being processed in Hyderabad. A five-day-old baby abandoned in bushes at Atmakur in Kurnool district was given shelter by Sisu Griha volunteers. In another case, a widow who was allegedly raped delivered a baby. Her husband died of AIDS and she is also HIV-positive. Doctors advised her not to breastfeed her. She abandoned the baby. In another case, a 15-year-old unwed mother delivered a female baby and abandoned it. A one-and-a-half-year-old girl was picked at the railway station here.
In Sisu Griha custody
These babies are taken care of by Sisu Griha volunteers and housed at Pedapadu. Project Director, Women and Child Welfare, M. Nirmala said the home had a sanctioned strength of 10 and each child is given an amount of Rs. 1,500 every month. Until the adoption is formalised, the babies are in the custody of Sisu Griha. Ms. Nirmala said they had never thought that the problem was so serious as much before the home was set up babies started reaching them. A separate room for the babies was under construction with temperature controlling system for both winters and summers. The department which deputed trained ayas to other departments in the past due to lack of work is being redrafted now. She said adoption procedure is complex now. The application is processed in Hyderabad with help of computers to match the babies with the adopted parents having closer features.
