CHENNAI:
The first signs of Assembly elections are here. Cadres of all major parties have started to "reserve" public and private compound walls for graffiti in the run-up to next year's polls.
It is most visible in parts of North Chennai where bold, black words "2006 full" suffixed to the party name have appeared on several walls.
"We have to commence election work in full swing shortly. It is better to reserve the compound walls now itself," says a party worker. He will soon engage painters to etch a portrait of his leader along with the party symbol and election propaganda.
The party workers have targeted the walls of public and private undertakings such as the GMR Vasavi Power Plant in Basin Bridge. They have not spared a portion of Ripon Buildings, the civic headquarters, along Raja Muthiah Salai. Ironically, the Chennai Corporation had launched a "poster-free" city campaign in 2003. It is mandatory for parties to get the building owners' consent before painting graffiti or messages on walls. But the rule is applied only in the case of independent houses. For private or public undertakings, it boils down to the might of the cadre.
In most cases, the local party leaders who reserve the walls strike a deal with the opponents.
